Darkness envelops
as if a deep fog has
settled in a valley,
taking my light
draining my mood.
Anxiety rushes in
to make things
a little more
interesting.
How long this time
will the Shadow lurk
and hold me fast
with her gripping claws?

/ September 26, 2016I just mentioned to Lillian how essential shadows are to are living, to the texture of our characters. Would we notice light without them?

/ September 26, 2016I’ve often thought of that too, Victoria. No, we wouldn’t notice the light…there would be no contrast.

/ September 26, 2016I understand this, deeply, Gayle, and hope it’s not autobiographical. There are so many dark edges that can creep in – depression, anxiety, fear. I love that you have named them, and named them something that has no actual substance, Shadow. This is so well done.

/ September 26, 2016I’m intrigued: you labeled the Shadow as female–“her gripping claws.” I never have labeled mine as male, seemed always something of an impersonal force. But I guess the Shadow was always me anyway. I’ll call him “Bobwulf!”

/ September 26, 2016That is interesting because I’ve written about this ‘shadow’ in the past and I too thought of it as genderless but somehow ‘she’ emerged with this poem. Bobwulf is as good a name as any! Thanks for coming by! xo

/ September 26, 2016I do think the interesting portion is the fact that we need those moments of shadows. Reminds of how the sentiment of melancholy was seen as a noble feeling to embrace… when we constantly need to sugar-rush ourselves with yet another high… how we need the valleys…

/ September 26, 2016You’re exactly right, Bjorn, we do need those times of shadows but maybe not to the extreme that sometimes they go. I like that you bring up embracing the feeling of melancholy…that isn’t much thought of as noble these days, but I certainly can see how that may help us in working through the feelings.

/ September 27, 2016There are some shadows that visit way beyond their welcome or the purpose of appreciating the light and I believe you have described how relentless they can be. So glad you are enjoying the light, Gayle!
