Cold as a Mountain Peak

In meditation, I find my mind more restless and wandering than usual. The minutes since sitting seem long and drawn out—time has stilled but not my attention. Heaviness is pervasive and a tightness around my heart.

I’m conscious of the fan blades moving lazily overhead and a slightly warmed breeze coming through the open window. The sound of tiny birds enters the room coming forth from the birdfeeder hanging just outside. A light, fluttering splash lets me know that someone is bathing in the nearby birdbath. The chimes outside the kitchen door let out an almost imperceptible tinkling as the melody finds its way to my room.

  1. A heartfelt haibun with potent haiku, Gayle/Bodhi. (Not sure which name you prefer so used both.)

Gayle, so many of our haiku are sad today, but how can they not be, as madmen perch over nuclear buttons?

A very lovely haiku to complete your haibun. Something frightful about one’s perceptions, sometimes.

  5. Beautiful Gayle! I love the way you have woven this around and through the silence. Enjoy the warmth for me. It has been raining now all day yesterday, last night and today. I long for Spring.

    • Hi Renee and thank you! It appears that we’re already into spring temperatures here. Warm days and still chilly nights…very pleasant. I hope it doesn’t hop into summer too quickly though.

    • I hadn’t thought of the windchimes in that way but I love that you did, Bjorn. I definitely was trying to capture my unease with those outside influences going on. Thank you very much.
