The Traveling Dad

For probably a couple of years before my Dad passed away, I had tried to get him a copy of “The Traveling Wilburys” Vol. 1, the collaborative effort by George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison.  My father was a huge music buff of all types of music, from current rock and roll, to jazz and rhythm and blues and I knew he would have loved this music.  However, during this time, the music had gone out of print when the group’s contract with Warner Brothers ended and the rights went to George Harrison and the music was never reissued before his death in 2001.  So I had no luck finding him a copy.  Now, they have been in print again for some time.

My boyfriend, Tom, had an old copy of the group’s first CD which was stored in a stack of others against the wall in our home office waiting to be filed away.  One afternoon, not too long after my Dad passed away, I went into the office and found “The Traveling Wilburys” CD lying in the middle of the floor.  I looked to the stack against the wall and it was undisturbed.  There was no way it could have dislodged itself from within the stack and “rolled” (in its case) over to the middle of the room.  I questioned Tom and asked him if he had gotten that CD out–no he hadn’t.  I was dumbfounded as to how it happened and then realized that it was Dad again–paying me a visit–letting me know he was still around and that he knew of my intentions.

He had visited me multiple times after his death, getting my attention by “bouncing” and then “stepping” across my bed at night just as I was going to sleep.  At first, I thought for sure my cat, Sita, had somehow gotten in the room and was pouncing up on the bed to have a snooze with me but no, that wasn’t the case.  I knew instinctively that it was Dad saying hello.

  3. Gave me goosebumps – the good kind. I’ve had many experiences like that with loved ones who have passed on. It’s good to know they’re still “here” and/or we’re “there” at the same time – in this continuous spectrum of life. Thank you for sharing this experience!

    • It’s so interesting to me that we share the same space only in different realms–but we’re as “there” as we ever were! It can be comforting can’t it. 🙂

And thank you, Betty, for sharing your thoughts with me.

  4. how lovely Gayle! Thanks for writing this. Yes, I often try and put myself in the position of the person who has passed. What would I do to try and let myself be known? I can’t think of a better way than this Gayle. Brilliant.

    • You’re welcome, Tamasin–glad you can relate. And I don’t think I had ever shared with him that I wanted to find that CD for him…very interesting. So much happening out there that we can’t perceive…

  5. This is so like people who have “passed” into that place where souls go. They just want you to know they’re still around. Neat story.

  6. How very sensitive you are to the gifts we have at our fingertips and that you accept and do not explain away these occurrences. I have similar visits and know what you speak of to be true. We are surrounded by the embraces of our loved ones wether we choose to recognise them or not. Beautiful post, Gayle.

    • I believe there is but a thin veil of awareness that separates us from the “other side”–so to speak. I have always been open-minded and intuitively know that what I have experienced is “real”–as real as we are! I do try and pay attention to what goes on around me in its fullest meaning.

Thanks for the lovely compliment, Leslie.

  7. Oh, I do remember when you posted the story of your dad walking across the bed. I loved it and I love this one. God bless him. He doesn’t want to be forgotten and wants you to know you are not. Have your sisters had similar experiences?

    • We couldn’t possibly forget him. When I decided to share my experience with my siblings and our mother–I found that my mother and one brother had had the same experience! I asked my mother what she thought it was and she said she didn’t know what to think. When I told her I felt it was Dad, she was very open to my explanation.

There is no doubt in my mind. 🙂

  9. This gave me chills, honestly. But I share the same viewpoint as you, regarding the veil. I’m glad that this was comforting, rather than scary, for you. Just out of curiosity, did you listen to the CD that day? 🙂

    • I was never frightened. I think I’ve known of the possibilities of how our loved ones may try to contact us for too long to have thought anything other than it was my Dad. Now, if he had started twirling my bed around or making spooky sounds, I may have had a different experience–gulp! 🙂

No, I didn’t and haven’t–I have to find that CD again first! If you know Sue Dreamwalker, I had shared this story with her and she thought strongly that there may be a message on there from my Dad. I hadn’t thought of that! I’m very curious as to what I might pick up on…

      Thanks, as always, friend. 🙂
