Star Light, Star Bright; dVerse Poetics, a series of Haiku

withered tea flowers
beneath showering starlight
cast shadows on stones

countless points of light
pierce the heavenly realm
pine cricket pauses

deep atrous heaven
pearls glow against your vastness
disappear at dawn

orbs of falling stars
criss-crossing the planet’s sky
blazing their glory

winter’s crescent moon
surrounded by brilliant stars
north wind spins the earth

mountainous peaks
stretch craggy arms toward stars
first snow starts to gust

river of heaven
swirling patterns of starlight
celestial show

As we celebrate a time of light and festivities of the season, Toni asks us to write a poem on stars over at dVerse:  http://dversepoets.com/2015/12/15/tonis-title-pending/

  1. Crescent moon is my favourite – the thin sliver 🙂 Gorgeous use of words, especially in the last stanza – makes me think of star trails!

  2. What a gorgeous set of haikus – however did you think of so many to fit the topic? The River of Heaven reminds me of a Van Gogh painting, while the pine cricket pausing, as if to take in the star shower is just such a lovely, subtle touch!

    • Georgina, I should have delineated these haiku from one another. It ended up looking like it was one poem…not my intention. But I’m glad you liked it and I’m pleased that you were inspired. And thanks for liking my Rumi writes too. He was the best!

      • There are special creatures in our lives. I find WordPress difficult with lines and not easy to manipulate. Spaces are important but it’s the words that work within them that count.

  6. Your haiku really give many different poetic views of the evening sky. I am with Prajakta. I like the one about the crescent moon also. If you are also a visual artist, I could see this one as a painting as well. Smiles.

    • Thanks so much, Mary. No, I’m not a painter but I wouldn’t mind if someone who was wanted to use that haiku as inspiration. 🙂

    • Well….I just realized these are beautiful haiku, after reading others’ replies. But perhaps that is a wonderful compliment, right? To read your words and be so involved in the sense of them, that the form disappears…the strict rules of the form for me, are nowhere to be found because your imagery is truly lovely.

      • And I realized that I should have put a little something between them all to designate them as individual haiku. Sorry that I hadn’t thought of that. But I appreciate your very generous compliment, thank you very much, Lillian!

  12. You used my two favorite kigo – first snow and river of heaven – and did beautifully with all of them but these two are my favorites. All of these fall into a category of “wish I had written that”. Gorgeous Gayle.

        • Haha…I like many of those Japanese words that describe the different aspects of seasons, etc., even though I don’t know the language…they just sound cool! 🙂

Sorry to be so late with this! Stanza #2 Shouldn’t pierces be pierce? or piercing? It hurts. Love the pictures you paint, I can see them in my head.

    • With “countless points of light pierces…” light is the subject so then the verb becomes pierces. You can use grammarbase.com and check your work for free. I’m so glad that you liked these…thank you, Barbara!
