Full Moon and Specters

Everything’s darker
come October.
Even our
usual long,
sunny days are
getting dimmer.
There might be
a slight dip
in temp but
it still steams
with humidity.
Some years fall
doesn’t topple
upon us until
winter.
The 31st
means Halloween!
As kids we
always hoped
for a cool one
so those often
hot costumes
that we wore
would be more
bearable
as we tore
from house
to house
trick-or-treating
ourselves
through the night.
A full moon
would add
to the creepiness
and if the wind
was blowing
the shadows
would rock-
and-roll
and create
specters in the
trees that
chased us
all the way home.

Ghouls’ Repast

Midnight strikes,
a light breeze kicks up
twirling fallen leaves,
one rests upon a crypt.
Thin slice of moonlight
pierces the trees,
alighting on the vault.
Scratching can be heard,
insistent and frantic,
heavy lid now cracked,
life and death are blurred.
Bony fingers grip the edge,
a moan escapes the tomb,
remembering the sledge
that drove the nail within.
A hundred years have
passed and it’s time to
rise again on All Hallows’
Eve, a night for ghouls’
repast. Phantoms come
forth from the cemetery
plots, howling with
glee as their fete begins
with earnest. Deep shadows
surround the assembly and
the hedge begins to rustle;
tiny goblins soon appear
with sharp and wicked teeth.
All grab hands and begin
their spinning game, ‘round
and ‘round, faster and faster,
cackling with delight. The wee
hours pass and the merriment
continues as long as the moon
remains high. Just before dawn
breaks, before even the sun peeks,
one by one they begin to
depart, returning once again
to their “final resting place.”

Goblins and Ghouls

Google Images

Goblins and ghouls
assemble in the gloaming
drinking from goblets
of gelatinous guts.

Gathering together
from their gimcrack shacks,
they play pranks on each
other flinging ghastly, fat bats.

Their grisly grins are more
gruesome than gay, lopsided
and gnashing, greasy and gray.

This one night they group
feeling quite giddy, gyrating
and spinning under the
globe of the moon.

Grimy and grizzled
they greet each other
down in the graveyard
where gristley gigot is served.

They’re grotesque and
gruff and speak in
gesturing gibberish
as they gibe and glare
in loathsome glee.

Soon eyes are glassy
from gaiety’s abundance
as the dim rays of dawn
glance over the glade.

With one last, guttural
growl they grouse, slinking down
deep into their gelid grottos–
gloomy again until next Halloween.

Midnight’s Tea

The witches were gathered in their coven one night,
incantations were flying and creating a fright.

They howled and they shuddered and cackled with glee,
as they added more ingredients to their midnight’s tea.

Three pinches of moss mites, two scrapes of a gator
and four full tablespoons of over-ripened capers.

Oh, the steam was now rising in misty curlicues
as the tea went on steeping while they looked for their shoes.

“Those are mine”,  said one.  “No, they’re not”, retorted the other.
“Yours are Manolo Blahnik’s, mine are the Jimmy Choos!”
