Life and Love; a Rondel

There was a time when I thought you were the one
And then my world parted and another caught my eye.
That’s the way of life and love; we ride it high
Until incompatibility says we’re done.

We fall in love before we’ve begun
We scale mountains holding hands; we are deified.
There was a time when I thought you were the one
And then my world parted and another caught my eye.

All were dreams and lust, our eyes locked, not seeing past fun,
Not paying attention to what was unrealized.
Disappointment rattled, shook us awry,
We started tumbling, unrolling; we came undone.
There was a time when I thought you were the one.

Join me at dVerse Poets where I am the host Thursday at 3PM EST and give instruction on the Rondel.  It should be fun!  http://dversepoets.com/2016/02/11/meeting-the-bar-the-rondel/

‘Twas Just a Joke

We were teased for maybe two weeks.
Humidity dropped, temperatures
did too. Late nights were chilly,
early mornings too. There was
a decided dryness in the air that
is rare in these parts. Ah, at last
it’s here, I sighed and smiled, fall
has come to Florida, maybe a bit
earlier this year. What a gift, a
wondrous delight, to find that she
had tiptoed in when we really
had not expected. Oh, we felt
so blessed that summer’s heat
had been quietly dismissed and
fall had taken his place. What
had we done to receive such
grace? No matter, we simply
smiled our gratitude and
enjoyed the sweet bliss of an
early respite from a lengthy
sweltering sweat bath, aka,
summer in the Sunshine State.
Oh, but wait, ‘twas just a joke!
We were being mocked, made
fun of and taunted by a bully.
You’ve got to be kidding me!
It was not to be. It did not last.
That late evening coolness has
gone, blown back to the north.
And summer returned, not done,
bringing his best pal humidity
along with soaring temperatures
back into the high eighties.

Dad

There you are in black and white

A photo taken posed for the camera

You’re eyes locked with mine.

After you died we were gathering pictures

For a collage to celebrate your life.

I stared at this photo and started to cry–

I wanted to see some kindness there.

I said to my sister, look, don’t you see it?

It’s there in his eyes–it’s there I just know it.

But as I studied it closer, I saw the truth–

Your eyes mirrored back to me the empty,

Shallow space I had always encountered.

What was it that had held you so closed?

What had etched and chiseled the pain

On your heart so deeply and fixed

That you couldn’t feel ours?

You freely shared your depression and darkness

And your deep regret for the life of your choosing.

As I grew older my hate softened to sorrow as I realized

You weren’t capable of being the someone I wanted.

In the shortened span of time at your ending

You remained firmly entrenched in your narcissism.

It was our folly we looked for something more.
