Life Without Regret; A Sijo

The elderly Samurai’s katana had lain unused for decades
His weapons now displayed prominently honoring his ranking
Stern eyes reflect his pensive memories—lives taken

  6. I have never heard of a sijo and would like to know more. There is so much in those three lines, Gayle. I had to re-read them several times.

  10. I can’t begin to imagine the immensity of living with the knowledge that I have taken a life. I think I have just a bit of Buddhist consciousness–I feel guilty killing spiders that decide to come in my bedroom.

  11. Your poem, for me, breaks some of the illusions we carry around as humanity about the past, how we like to pretend that in the past there were no wars, warriors, soldiers, killings. The scenery you presented makes me think of that, in contrast with today’s nuclear bombs and machine guns.

Just shows how much influence and awe they had imposed with their reputations and daring exploits during their lifetime!
