Diversion

As if on cue,
in the same
whirlwind in which
he had arrived,
he departed.
I was the target
of his need for
diversion.
The opening of
emotions and
shared laughs
were deep.
Amazing
how quickly
your heart acts
to secure you
to another.

  10. I remember those days – burning and falling, falling and burning. A whirlwind for sure.
I used to be amazed at ‘how quickly your heart acts to secure you to another’, now I just read about it :).

  12. Oh that ache of wanting so much that one is willing to attach oneself to what will not really fulfill.

    • It is an ache and often we don’t find out until too late that it wasn’t the best idea to secure ourselves to that particular person. Love and learn I guess, right?

This is really gut-wrenching to read because I”ve lived it so many times. This is the worst feeling in the world, realizing this truth:

    “I was the target
    of his need for
    diversion.”

    And that ending:

    “how quickly
    your heart acts
    to secure you
    to another.”

That’s actually how I created my first daughter (the greatest blessing/complete turn-about of my life). Someone broke my heart beyond repair, and I raced to find someone new who wouldn’t hurt me. Weeks later, I was pregnant by someone I didn’t have time, or ability, to love. But regardless, I had her, and my budding family, so it was all as it should have been, and the blessings have only grown from there.

    • I believe that there are no mistakes and the fact that your broken heart led you to ultimately create your “greatest blessing/complete turn-about of your life”, well that says it all doesn’t it? So very happy for you, Nebraska J. xo

“Look to the end,” the Greek philosopher Solon told Croesus, king of Lydia, as he was about to attack the empire of the Medes. Croesus didn’t listen; was conquered, about to burned to death on a pyre, and he lamented Solon’s words. The Mede Emperor heard, took pity, and rescued him. Lucky man–most don’t have the luxury of a Greek philosopher advising us. We must look to the end, accept the inevitable. And in some cases, yes, rejoice in it. Yes.

Despite my norse fatalism I do believe one can change Fate, the threads woven by the three Wyrd Sisters. Somehow I did, as those who know these things, have told me. Nothing is written!!!

  21. Golly, Gayle, you hit the proverbial nail on the head with this one. It’s hard to travel as a solo operator on this challenging journey!

    • Thank you, Lorna, I always appreciate your comments. Yes, it is hard to travel solo, seems we’re hardwired to bond with each other. Maybe we should bond with ourselves first, right?

  22. Lovely piece of writing. I get a sense that perhaps for the ‘diverted one’ this may have been more fun? The choice of the word target alludes further to that. Maybe such dances are not always ‘two sided’ after all? One person tango perhaps? Or am I too cynical? 😉

    • No, I don’t think you’re too cynical. The ways of connection with people covers a lot of territory. Sometimes I think you can get in over your head too quickly and before you know it you’re entangled with someone before you’ve really had a chance to get to know them. Human beings and their relationships are sometimes complicated. 🙂 Oh, and thank you! (This isn’t my prompt poem just in case you thought it was).
