The Red Shoes of Happiness

I chose as my fortune:  Your shoes will make you happy today.

It’s a bad year for us Monkeys.
Luck is dismal, scant and funky.

There’s only one thing that we can do.
Wear red underwear, belts, socks and shoes.

Red will bring us better fate this year,
and we count on it to bring us good cheer.

And the scarlet underwear that I should wear
must be purchased by my spouse somewhere.

The optimum blessing will then be had
and life thereafter will be established and glad.

But now there’s one other obstacle I face
and that is to find red shoes to stave off disgrace.

Quick! I must get to the store and find
red shoes that are pretty and make fortune aligned.

So many to choose from, a wedge, a sandal, a loafer
but they must be comfortable so I won’t need a chauffeur!

Huaraches, ballet flats, espadrilles, moccasins and clogs,
it doesn’t really matter, as long as they’re red and cover my dogs.

This year of the Monkey is not auspicious you see
for those born a simian by imperial decree.

So I must not delay, no, not one more minute!
Bring me shoes that are red, size 6, with no limit!

I’ll try them all on, one right after the other
and then rest in the knowledge that I’m safe from all bother.

Here, these will do the trick, they’re sweet and comfy;
and I’m already feeling exponentially more lucky!

I discovered some Chinese New Year superstitions for Monkeys in the year of the Monkey.   Red underwear is especially important and must be bought by a spouse, family member or friend.  So if you are the sign of the Monkey in this year of the Monkey, make haste and get yourself decked out in some red duds!  (I’m a Rabbit, no worries for me this year.)

Toni (Kanzensakura) is our host at dVerse Poets today and asks us to choose from several “fortunes” as inspiration for our writing.  Come join us for Poetics!

  1. Oh, how fun. Not a bad idea. I love the idea of red to turn that luck upside down…and how different the interpretation of colors in Asian cultures.

  2. Really, I didn’t know that Gayle ~ I love the idea of wearing red stuff, from underwear to shoes ~ If only its not winter here, I will be wearing red skirts & shoes, smiles ~ Love the luck & happiness, smiles ~

  3. Really fun poem you put together! I learned something new…the symbolism of red in the Chinese fortune for the Monkey years. I’m not fond of red for anything, though, but need not worry on this, because I’m the year of the Tiger. 🙂

  4. Heehee. This makes me glad I’m a Rooster/Wannabe Dragon. 😉

  5. Big fan of red underwear, but no on has ever bought them for me, except me.

  6. P.S., I’m a Tiger

  7. what fun this is! I’ll be on the lookout for monkeys in red shoes 😉

  8. That sounds like fun… !!!

  9. Oh, I do have red underwear, but don’t usually allow anyone to buy it but myself, as I don’t trust other’s taste…
This is an entertaining write, with a slightly breathless, superstitious quality to it that I can well imagine a person uttering…

  10. I’ll paint my kitchen red, it might keep the monkeys out which will be lucky for me! Lovely frolick.

  11. Oh, I love the light-hearted tone of this. I hope those who are ‘monkeys’ enjoy the color red!!

Well, goodness what an epic & fun romp. I am a Monkey (born in 1944), & red has always been my favorite color (ironically). After six years of ownership I just painted my vehicle red; to my wife’s chagrin. My red underwear, shirts, ties, & ball caps will have to suffice; real men do not often wear red shoes, though I do have several pair of sneakers with red on them. I will do my best to further support & promulgate your message, hoping it heightens my luck.

  13. Smiling I am….and what fun to find out about the red undies! 🙂 Loved your take on this one!

  14. What fun it was reading this!

  15. So much fun! I loved it all, from the words to the format to the interesting info. Great job!

  16. This is lovely!! I love the rhythmic flow here 😀

  17. Ha.. I wonder if it applies to male monkeys as well… red underwear is a telltale in the gym I guess… 😉

  18. Red!! I love the brilliant red that flashes through this. 🙂

  19. Oh no.. shoes
    root of all now..
    ‘evil’.. protecting
    yes.. but stronger
    no.. ah yes.. now
    aLL the
    rest so much
    more Real..
    aWay from
    as humans

    oF Red..;)

  20. My mum used to say “red shoes mean no knickers”, so your poem made me chuckle.

  21. Perhaps your protagonist is superstitious, but at appears that she has a lot of fun within that superstition. Fun read!
