She Was a Really LOUD Girl!

She was a really LOUD girl!
She liked to wrestle
and bump, climb trees,
and scrape her knees.

She shouted and cheered
life on from the top of
her lungs. She whooped
and hollered; HEAR MY FUN!

Playing football with
the boys, she could
even make a tackle,
rankle the other team.

She didn’t mind dirt
or mud to be smudged
and grunge to cover
her from head to toe.

She played the drums,
thumping LOUDLY!
They were an extension
of her personality.

Crashing those cymbals,
tapping those snares,
SOUND was the way
she showed her wares!

But she was endearing
too, because her love
shown through…her
heart especially true.

And sympathy showed
and empathy too for
those in pain or
somehow hurting.

Her aura large, it
enveloped a room
shining brightly, light-
emitting a halo.

Her affection was
genuine, her kindness
a gift but it never stopped
her from enjoying a SHRIEK!

  2. Wonderful… why are we modelling stereotypes on people… I’m also glad that she was allowed to be loud and boisterous… and I hope that also boys are allowed to be silent and modest.

Tom boys named Bobbie have always been my favorite playmates, for when the curtains are drawn & the audience in absentia, her shrieks of passion fill the room as well. Oddly, you have described me as the LOUD BOY too; smile.

  6. Not such a bad thing to live life loud, when love is the loudest part of all!

  7. I love to discover the apparent contradictions in a personality. I grew up in a rural area and my closest neighbor was a boy. We played cowboys and Indians fed mud pies to my dolls. So I suppose I used to be sort of a tomboy, and still have a couple of scars to prove it. Fun character sketch.

    • I grew up playing cowboys and Indians too, Victoria, but we had a neighborhood filled with children so always had lots of roles to play. Thanks! :~)

    • Ha, no she is not me. I was the opposite of a very, loud girl growing up. Although I could get loud when a brother or sister annoyed me but mostly I was a quietly shy and demure girl. :~)

  12. She sounds so vibrant, she would need to be loud, to expend some of that energy. You bring her to life on the screen for us so vividly.

    • Hmm…I don’t know about that, Mr. Doc. Perhaps it was my little-girl-self coming through that wished I had been more like she was when I was growing up.

  18. She is quite a girl. This is the one who gets the best of both worlds. She gets her hand dirty on the playing field when other girls watch from the sidelines. She mixes indoors in clean surroundings with the girls. Wonderful lines Gayle!

  21. Oh, I had to laugh at that – my mother has forever been telling me I am too LOUD, that I should moderate my voice or my laughter… even though I then worked as a teacher and lecturer, where my loud voice has stood me in good stead, carrying to the furthest corners of the classroom!
I like the jauntiness and humour in this poem, which nevertheless conveys a serious message about not conforming to stereotypes and notions of ‘seemliness’.

    • Oh, that is funny, MarinaSofia. I’ve known many teachers and some of them had quite loud voices and like you said, for good reason! I like that she’s a free-spirited girl too. 🙂

  22. It feels to me that you’re describing a well developed, complete person throughout this verse. Boisterous, loud, full of life…what’s not to like about these. Nicely done.

  23. Well.. i can certainly
    relate to Loud
    and my wife
    has difficulty
    escaping Loud
    as Loud as i am
    when speaking
    normally
    as any Lion
    would.. i keep
    taling her my
    mouth and head
    and weight empirically
is twice as big.. and sure
    she talks
    half
    as loud
    as me..
    it’s not always easy
    being big and
    loud
    or small
    and quiet..
    but i do like it
    loud and
    soft
    as
    well.. as
    sMiLes..:)
