Blinding Jewels

Precious jewels of every color
encircle her neck like a priest’s collar.
She makes use of them to blind and impress,
manipulate the world, make a dollar.

Stars in her eyes, thinks herself an empress
while cajoling, using words to profess.
Bold, yet empty soul, clearly insincere,
flatters, misleads, feigns, deceives with finesse.

Men fawn, become fools…she, acting cavalier
takes what she can get, leaves behind a jeer.
How damned the woman scorned becomes a shrew
and uses her sharpened tongue as a spear.

Askew, she sees her life a trumping coup
but behind those untruths she must construe
her heart cannot be whole and live this lie.
So let go this façade and start anew.

  1. oh i hope that she can get beyond this facade…this person that she puts on…she does not seem like one that i would want to be around on the surface, but your close makes me empathize a bit…that behind it perhaps there is a heart…

  2. one can never be happy living a façade… no truths on the outside means they’re eating you on the inside. Great write

  3. This is a sad truth for some, living a life cajoling for worldly possessions.. I guess some eventually gain an insight – others never understand being captured in their own glittering prison,

  4. We wear many masks to thrive within all the spheres we inhabit daily, work, friends, & family, and the Me-Time when the facade can be dropped, or with a spouse if we are lucky.

    • Yes, you’re right, Glenn. It’s more that mask that we wear to try to deceive others that’s especially troublesome.

  6. I have seen women like that, very vicious and cunning too ~ I wonder how they can keep up with all the lies and insincere life ~ In the end, I hope they wake up and realize their foolishness ~ Good one Gayle, enjoyed the portrayal of the woman with blinding jewels ~

  8. Excellent, really! You have characterized her well, given the reader a vivid picture of the kind of woman she is. I do hope she is able to change her ways so that she and the people around her will both be happier!

  10. Like you well written poetry here. Most of the people are like her. Probably in survival mode as far as letting people in. Things, etc. never impressed me. A person’s time is what actually counts in the end.

    • You’re probably right…survival mode…but how off-base…tragic isn’t it. You’re fortunate to have not gotten caught up in the ‘things’ of the world…giving of yourself is a true gift.

    • Yes, she’s trapped in a real mess. I’m so fascinated with the different human behaviors. And you’re right…possibly a few hard knocks and it may set her on the right path. Thanks for sharing your views, Sumana.

  12. I think that for most people one day the facade cracks and they appear for who they are. Better if they realize it first and can change their ways. Great use of the form, Gayle.

    • It seems it would take a lot of energy to keep that façade up, right? Exhausting! Yes, best to realize that there is a better, happier path to follow. Thanks for your thoughts and compliment, Gabriella.

  13. Gay le, this is stunning, from ‘like a priest’s collar’ to ‘let go this facade’—brilliant.
