The Way of Tea

Soft flute melodies
enchant the room;
with measured grace
the tea ceremony begins.
The tea house clean
utensils handled with
distinct purpose, each
movement meaningful.
A meditation in action,
significance and detail
in its formal conveyance.
Each gesture choreographed
as if a ballet of the hands.
The ritual incorporates the
outer and the inner states.
It then becomes not so much
about drinking tea but
giving attention fully
to the art—from the heart
and blending the two.

  1. This too is for tea as well*

Tea ceremony to be given to the guests
Come inside the tokonoma and give it a rest
Now to proceed to seating seiza style on the mat
The tea is Now served as an art of which is that
The bowl goes around with generous bows
All seem at ease to be friendly as this is allowed

  2. Ohhhh sooo lovely!

  3. In my “previous life” I had the privilege of attending a tea ceremony offered by a companion from Taiwan. It is so Zen-like, so spiritual.

  4. i think i would love to be a part of one of these…if for nothing else that last bit…the art of giving attention fully…

  5. Exquisite Gayle, a ballet of the hands, how beautiful that image is.

  6. Beautiful Gail, a poem on true mindulness, a state not easily reached although at the same time,, very possible 😊 x

  7. Felt good reading you post on the “The way of tea” mores as I was fortunate enough to witness it. May I share the post with you?

    Thank you and regards!

    • So glad you enjoyed this, Dilip. I’ve never seen it done but would love to some day. Yes, you may share…and thank you for doing so.

      You’re welcome… :~)

  8. I’ve served and received in Oryoki a few times at meditation retreats:
    “utensils handled with
    distinct purpose, each
    movement meaningful.
    A meditation in action,”

these lines speak to it beautifully. True reality shows itself in the mundane. beautiful

    • I would love to witness this ceremony some day. And I like your last sentence…how right you are. Thanks for sharing your feelings on this with me…I appreciate it.
