In The Beginning

In the beginning there was the word
and the word was good. It tickled
and played with my imagination and
more of them strung together
and became cohesive…hey, I’m a poet!
Those poems seemed to flow pretty
easily in those heady, early days…
My angst, humor, pain and spirituality
flowed from brain to pen in seeming
effortlessness…I had so much to share.
The energy of other poets spurred me on
and I shared and read and wept and laughed
and joined together…took some space…
time to breathe, grew and changed.
Came back, still changing, sorting my thoughts
and those words are taking on new patterns, new
feelings, new growth…new friends have appeared.
It’s give and take…you gotta give, encourage others
as they encourage you and give of their time to
help you evolve, develop, become…and change again.
Transmutable…a poet is just like life.

Anthony Desmond is our host at dVerse Poets tonight and asks us to write on our evolution as writers. I haven’t had a very long career of writing…less than three years but I have learned so much during this short period of time and continue to grow and learn with much of that knowledge coming from prompts through dVerse…thank you! http://dversepoets.com/2014/03/04/poetics-poetically-evolving/

  1. a poet is just like life…as we ricochet off each other…small touches…propelling each other further along…i like the allusions to creation in this as well…the word is good….and its a journey much longer than a few steps…i am just getting started as well…

    • Yes…the journey is much longer than a few steps. And I love seeing the different ways in which people choose to express themselves. So unique…just as we all are.

  2. The more we read each other, the more we know of each other. That requires insight and a poetic skill to ‘read’ each other. For me the most important thing is the qualitiy of giving in the poems.

    • You are so right about that…sometimes quite a bit of concentration and insight to see each other. That’s one thing that I value too…the willingness to open up and show us who you are.

  3. yes, poetry is just like life… it’s not something you can force; it’s like wisdom in a way: you have to grow into it with experience…

  4. It is through these Beginnings we grow through the Word! For the Words we bring offer up our hearts. For we give through word our view of life often reflected by our experience.

  10. Between you and me, when I look at my earliest poetry I cringe…it was so effusive, as you say, full of angst and ecstasy. Age seems to temper our expression, doesn’t it?

    • I agree…it was like my feelings couldn’t wait to be expressed on the page. Even in less than three years I can see the change…and tempered expression…you’re so right.
