Back Nine

The first I sliced into the woods, the second was a perfect drive
that landed smack dab in the middle of the green, not to one side.
Funny thing, when I use those glow-in-the-dark balls made for night
golf, my game is better. Once, a long putt was placed exquisitely, lied
gently teetering on the edge of the cup and then plop. A pro’s wage
would have been handsome! The moment is etched, saved
in my memory as one that brought such joy, and pride, it made
me blush to be complimented by my partner and see her admiring face.
Many a time, up at the clubhouse after a game, poor sports would nurse
their lousy scores with liquor and others would brag about missing church
with the family for another Sunday. The back nine was far worse
than the front–many treacherous bunkers and water holes, and many a purse
was lost through wager. While some were won back,
others were left at that.

Tony Maude instructs us on the very interesting form of Bout Rimes at dVerse Poets: http://dversepoets.com/2014/02/13/meeting-the-bar-bout-rimes/

Here is the list of words we used in the order to which they were given:  drive, side, night, lied, wage, saved, made, face, nurse, church, worse, purse, back, that

    • Yes, the character watching may be almost as fun as the game! I did take some lessons from a pro and joined a golf league with my mother and one of my sisters long ago. Had so much fun…never got great at it but fun just the same. Thanks, Claudia.

  2. Enjoyed this – a story told and I who have played a few games of golf and look like an angry combine harvester half way through – admire anyone who plays. 🙂

  4. Many poems using the given words touched on similar themes. I’m impressed by your going against the grain (golf pun not intended).

Really good read! Nice use of words and fluid wordflow.

  5. Another golf poem – but you are obviously far better at the game than my character is … smiles. I’m surprised that we haven’t had more golf poems – although the original from which I took the rhymes has nothing to do with golf at all!

    • Well with that word ‘drive’, golf jumped into my brain…so off I went. Haven’t played in a long while but did love the game. Loved what you did too, Tony…yeah, he’s a different kind of character alright!

  6. Another golf poem, which almost makes it impossible for me to comment about the content… But I love the witty ending.

  13. I am not a huge fan of golf, but I enjoyed this. Why is it that the back nine is always the worst? Thank you.
