Among the Thicket

Among the tangled, twisting thicket,
crickets chirp in quick succession.
Discretion gone, for mates they look,
hooking her makes males chirp.
Flirting, rubbing their two wings,
singing songs that become a scream.
Extreme measures, some are taken,
awakening some who wish to sleep.
Weeping, cursing, all that racket,
boskets overrun by crickets.

Tried a new form today…the link or chain poem. The ending word is rhymed in the first word of the next line. Submitting this for Open Link Night where Anthony Desmond is our host over at dVerse Poets:

  1. Very clever, Gayle. You did well with a difficult form. Crickets definitely have the ability to wake up those who would wish to sleep!!

  2. I like the meter and rhythm of the poem. You’ve worked well with the form. You’ve described that intense activity before the mating of crickets very vividly.

  3. This is cool!! Sounds great when read loud 🙂

  4. interesting form and well done!

  5. …ah, excellent job trying the form… never encountered this before and it looked quite hard to execute though it reads easy to eyes & ears….. i enjoyed this… smiles…

    • Hi Kelvin…it seems as if there are infinite numbers of forms…I do enjoy giving them a try. Well, some of them anyway. 🙂 Thank you!

  6. ha. i look forward to the day when it is warm enough again to hear the crickets through the open window….but sometimes they can def get loud…when you can not sleep…smiles….cool near rhymes in this gayle…

    • I do love their sound on summer evenings…but honestly they can sound like a scream sometimes. Yes, tricky to find perfect rhymes…but, hey, it was fun giving it a try. Thanks, Brian.

  7. Fun form and well-executed and you reminded me that there is a cricket in here somewhere that sings at night when I haven’t been able to find him. Will try now in the light so he can go outside to the girlfriend he’s calling for!

  8. Nice job on the link or chain poem ~ And I’m smiling at those noisy crickets ~

  9. Great form!! I just wrote two of these this week there was a prompt…soooo I know how difficult it can be to create one of these and so I send kudos to you! I love your topic too by the way… 🙂 Nature makes me smile.

What a terrific opening lines, stunning

  11. I’m amazed at the variety of forms of poetry that there are. I can hear those crickets and their chirpy racket. At first, it sounds soothing, then it sounds annoying. You said it so well!

Sorry I can’t catch up on all of your posts–I’m just trying to make an effort to let you know I’m still alive, kicking, and thinking of you!

    • Bless your heart, Lorna. No one ever has to feel obligated to catch up with my posts. I was away from my friends’ blogs for months…I couldn’t possibly catch up with all of them. I hope you feel better soon. I’m thinking of you too!

Oh and thank you for the nice compliment !
