Cinderella’s Close Call

Image from Bluebell Books

Only memories of that astonishing time
remained to mull over on this quiet
day lounging in her garden.

Sipping raspberry leaf tea and perching
upon what had once been a magical
carriage, she mused on the turn of events.

Yes, she had met her Prince Charming and yes,
they had married but she quickly came to realize
that she preferred an unfettered life.

Her domineering and tyrannical mother-in-law
would have kept her enslaved and downtrodden…
hadn’t she already experienced that?

She reflected on her selfish stepmother and crabby
stepsisters and knew she had made the right decision.
Taking another sip of tea, she stretched and smiled.

No, she preferred a life free of manipulation and
control…the freedom to  tend her pumpkin patch
with no one to answer to but herself.

Hanging on a low branch of a nearby tree,
the glass slippers remind her of what she
had almost lost…again.

    • I think we may have to experience things more than once until we “learn our lessons” so to speak. This girl wasn’t going to “settle”. Yeah, she needs a man with a backbone who won’t let his domineering mother chase his woman away! Ha!

  4. Excellent, some people do find themselves circling in the same patterns of relationships. Glad she enjoys her pumpkin patch!

    • Yes, I made her an independent young woman…making her own choices for happiness. 🙂 Thanks for coming by, Akila.

  7. What a clever twist here. I agree with Claudia, she needs to find the right prince; but meanwhile I loved the image of her in the pumpkin patch (seeds from her pumpkin carriage) with her tea! And doing her own thing.

  8. Oh, I love this one, Gayle. I’ve found my Prince Charming, but there are times when I crave my independence. I can’t have it both ways, though, now can I?

  9. Nice twisting of the story there – her happy ever after coming without Prince Charming as she refused to exchange one set of externally imposed expectations for another. I wonder what happened to him?

    • Thank you, Tony. That prince was a mama’s boy…he remarried someone his mother chose for him that she could boss around. 😉

  10. Hi, Gayle. Please forgive my absense.
One door closes and another opens … or, perhaps, one is unlocked and another is ready to lure us in and cage us … but, really, the freedom is within us … this Cinderalla knows that and will be ok not matter what, I think. Beautifully written.

    • Hi Diane…please don’t apologize…I’m in the same boat my friend!

As a child I really loved the idea of Prince Charming coming and making my life perfect…real life isn’t like that though (that’s why they’re fairy tales.) This Cinderella found her inner strength and made the right decision to keep her freedom and happiness. A happy ending ever after… 🙂

    • Thank you, Truedessa. I so agree, we do need balance…and if it’s not there…well, best make some changes. I have great faith that she will find it…

    • Glad to hear that my peace comes through. No, it’s not there all the time, but I do feel generally pretty good. I seem to be on a kick for women these days…rooting them on to be strong and secure and knowing who they are first before others. Thanks for the visit and the compliment! :~)
