Small Stone # 8

As I held you this
afternoon, I told
you I knew how
sleepy you were
and it was ok
to let your heavy
eyes close and that
you could even
snore if you wanted to.
I said that kitties
snore and dogs,
people and pigs
maybe even birds.
I demonstrated
quiet snoring and
you smiled big.
You studied my
face as I continued
to quietly talk to you
about sleeping.
Soon, you were.

(An encounter this afternoon with my four month old granddaughter Mira).

  1. I loved this–there is a calmness and beauty about it–just lovely

  2. Good write, grandmother. It makes me think of kids gone by and grandkids who have yet to come.

  3. Oh, I so love this – the snore and the big smile………..lucky you with such a lovely little armful of love.

  4. I can feel the love from here!

  5. Very nice. Thanks for sharing the moment.

Your “small stones” have been a pleasure to read. 🙂

  6. I remember those precious moments, cuddling a contented, sleepy baby. These poems you write about Mira are so tender and full of your love for her, Gayle. Beautiful memories to share with her when she’s older! 🙂

    • In a way, I’m reliving some of the times when my two girls were her age…so precious…then and now. I’m glad you have those memories too. Thanks so much, Jacqueline. 🙂

  7. This is fabulous Gayle and one of my favourite small stones.

    Christine xx

  8. awww how precious a moment….that you demonstrated snoring made me smile really big….

  9. SO precious. So real. So Gayle.

  10. Sweet. I can see the picture clearing in my minds eye.

  11. This is precious … so gentle and real, Gayle. What tenderness comes through when you write about your granddaughter!

    ‘I said that kitties
    snore and dogs,
    people and pigs
    maybe even birds.

… made me think how my new kitty, Oscar, always snores when he sleeps! ♥

    • I found that if I cradle her in my arms when she gets sleepy and then talk very softly to her…she falls right to sleep. It’s usually on the subject of sleep and giving in to it! See, kitties do snore… How nice you have a new cat companion, Diane…I love his cute name too. Thanks, Diane.
