Sitting on the back, screened-in porch,
the afternoon shadows were lengthening
as the overhead fan droned on while I read.
Suddenly, a scrambling racket was heard
crashing down the old palm.
A hawk had grabbed a squirrel
and had pinned him to the ground.
Spying me, he released his prey
and fled…the squirrel, a reprieve.

/ November 29, 2012I’m sure that squirrel is very grateful..but it wasn’t me. This is based on a true experience by my son-in-law. I had a similar one but the hawk crashed into a tree trying to nab a squirrel while I looked on…again, the squirrel escaped.

/ November 30, 2012Lucky escape – but did you not mean ‘pinned’ him to the ground? Or maybe the hawk was a writer, still holding the tools of his trade? LOL 🙂

/ November 30, 2012Oh, gosh…you are so right, Jinksy…I did mean pinned. That hawk did not take up a pen to grapple with that squirrel. Gosh, I hate when I do that…especially when I know better! Thanks, I’m going to change that right now.

/ November 30, 2012The squirrel is reprieved and the hawk goes hungry–yet there’s still a balance. Even our most random acts play into it. As always, you paint with nature’s brush most skillfully, bodhirose.

/ November 30, 2012I had a similar thing happen with a hawk trying to nab a bird at my birdfeeder. I swear the thing gave me a dirty look before it flew off. I’m amazed that you actually saw one crash into a tree!

/ November 30, 2012I could picture the whole thing… I’ve seen squirrels sitting on the ground right underneath a perching hawk…no inclination from either one to run from or try to capture the other…I don’t get it!
I call that crashing hawk, my “National Geographic” moment!

/ December 12, 2012Hehe, your “National Geographic” moment indeed! I like squirrels (except when they dig at my bulbs) but I’m almost sorry the hawk lost his supper. I’ve seen hawks in motion when they catch their prey – there is a strength and beauty in their movement that is breath-taking to behold. Such energy, speed and focus. Well, he probably got a mouse or two later anyway. 🙂

/ December 15, 2012We sometimes forget to put the nature thing in perspective…hawks have to eat too, right?! There is a hawk that Mira and I have seen (and heard) on our daily walks. Once it sat in a nearby tree and we watched each other. They are so beautiful…and I love to hear its piercing cry. These are the things that excite me…nature’s show. :~)
