Devoted

Nothing could have prepared me,
although I thought that I was ready.

I had months to peruse and ponder,
feathering my nest, feeling excited.

And I wasn’t sure, but I thought I could;
I was up for the challenge…baby on board!

Taking care, eating right, cradling
you carefully, everywhere day and night.

Some days held doubts, I was sure that I would fail,
who did I think I was to be taking on such a task?

No turning back, and I didn’t want to,
I was devoted to you and would do my best.

So true… we can prepare all we want, but are never truly prepared for motherhood.

    • Somehow things fell into place when I had my two girls. And the doubts…well, I still had them at times…but mostly things worked out just fine.

  4. Gayle, what a wonderful poem of preparation. There are really few more wonderful preparations than preparing for the birth of a baby! So well expressed!

    • I have babies on the brain because I’m a new grandma and helping take care of her…it’s turned my mind back to when I was a new mother. Thanks, Mary.

  7. And you will care for her wonderfully. There is no bond quite like that of a grandmother and a granddaughter. Enjoy every moment! I would bet my last dollar she feels safe and secure in her grandma’s arms:)

    • Isn’t that the truth. And thanks for the congratulations, Luz. That bond feels mighty tight already and she’s only 12 weeks old today! 🙂

  13. This is delightful, Gayle, not only for the poem itself but for capturing pending motherhood with all the conflicting ebb and flow of confidence and questioning. That’s one part of life I wouldn’t mind reliving.

  16. Devotion is a major part of preparation, isn’t it? It’s a bit beyond anticipation, with endurance built in. Nice poem.
