Snow Leopard

Hidden, rare, you escape our questing eyes
Dizzying altitudes are where you lay
Tibetan mountains offer sly disguise
Shadows darkened blend with your spotted gray
While romping blue sheep are your choicest prey
Slate-stone, thick, heavy coat, wide, padding paws
Keep you fixed and warm as you slink away
Naps on the cliffs, yawning jaws, stretching claws

Cunningly clever, don’t allow a glimpse
Seen, if you allow, but only a peek
Blending, perfectly still…as if a sphinx
Himalayan, craggy, mountainous peaks
Elusive, secretive, you raise our pique
Gone as we seek, our eyes are playing tricks
Ghostly legends tell of your tale unique
By monks, lamas and those who light joss sticks

    • I’m so intrigued by these elusive animals…and now, endangered animals…so few left in the wild. Glad you enjoyed my homage to the Snow Leopard…thanks, Brian.

  2. Wow – a double and so elegantly and precisely written. The poem is so rich in images and textures that one loses the form to the beauty of the words and their meaning. I think that’s what a form poem should do – provide the base (like the background you speak of) and let the art rest effortlessly upon it! Superb.

    • Well, I’m very pleased when I can manage to let the form fall away and just have the words “do their thing.” Thank you, Gay…I appreciate your kind praise and your introduction of Gemma for dVerse.

I like the elusiveness of your poem; it matches the snow leopard. I also loved the sound of “sphinx/ Himalayan.” Beautiful huitain.

  15. Amazing write 🙂 I love these creatures and am so against any of them being in captivity anywhere unless it is to save their species from becoming extinct. You’ve really woven such a beautiful tale around their mystique and their majesty. I could almost ‘see’ them. Fabulous writing.

    • Thank you, Bren, so glad you liked this…I’m happy to see your supportive comment for these amazing beings and their protection. I believe I saw that there are only about 6,000 left in the world..if that is a current figure. Such a shame. They are hunted for their fur and their organs are used in Chinese medicine…seemingly nothing is off limits to man and their desires.

  16. I love these wonderful Cats Gayle and you have done them justice with you excellent Poem..
    Wonderful photo’s too..
I find it hard when wonderful creatures like this are hunted and killed for fur etc… And hope soon Mankind will understand the damage we have done to such beautiful creatures as we have driven them to points of extinction along with many more species

    • So very happy you liked this writing, Sue…they truly are very special animals…there’s a certain mystique that I feel around them. Mythology and folklore of Tibet and Nepal have included tales of highly evolved beings who took on the form of snow leopards…I’m totally enthralled with those stories. I find it hard too to know that we have lost many species as a direct link to man’s actions.

      • Yes the Mystique around such folklore originates from somewhere I have always found Gayle and if man is not careful with his actions .. He could well find himself upon the Extinction List of Species.. Wishing you a Peaceful Sunday 🙂 xx Sue

Love the form and the two stanzas- and a beautiful capture of this rare cat….you got its characteristics, it’s mysticism, it’s hunting prowess…it’s spiritual significance….great stuff….some really nice lines in this- ‘slink’ ‘stretching’ ‘romping’- great word usage

  23. You know they’re magical creatures. Your words do them great justice. I wish more people appreciated their beauty and rarity and cherished them more alive than dead. Out of all of the felines (I love them all, ya know *smile*), I think these are probably my favorite. To be able to survive and thrive in such harsh environments…amazing.

    • Yes, I do know that…and they have a favorite place in my heart too. There are many legends and magical stories about them…they are like the Ninjas of the cat kingdom. I love all kinds of mystical stories that maybe most people would find unbelievable…I don’t…I know too well of how they are possible. 😉
