1999

Sunflower in my garden; photo by Gayle Rose

emerging calm
took a stand
independence
reigned and
I felt good

flourishing
within and
feeling sure
life was
humming
carrying
me along

though one
thing dark
was lurking
still and
causing grief
and a cracking
heart
yet I knew
I could not
change, I
let it go
to take
its time

writing latent
no interest
yet, but a
book picked
up, laid
a spark

went on
vacation
like never
before,
enjoying
Naples
and places
up north

time of
growth
and becoming
solid, vipassana
was my
morning daily,
content with
life, work
was good,
I took care
of me and
I loved you

  6. You had a goid year, when writing poetry becomes part of the equation, indeed. I loved Italy when I was there? Would go back and stay a while if I could. Your poem captures those moments sonwell of a year that must have been transformative.

    • Yes, it was a good year and yes, very transformative…the Naples I was referring to is a city on Florida’s gulf coast…sorry about that…but I can imagine Naples, Italy must have been quite an experience for you. Thanks for sharing with me.

I love this! Such a gentle easy flow, ending in the vipassana which explains your calm and acceptance of all things, right or wrong, good or bad. You breathe, you live, you press on, smiling and blessing the world with your good intentions and positive energy.

The big sunflower immediately reminds me of the ’90s; do you remember that brief style, perhaps a spring or summer season when every article of clothing created had sunflowers on it? I’ll never forget my short blue overalls and white summer dress, both splashed with big yellow flowers. 🙂

I love this transition in your poem:
    “though one
    thing dark
    was lurking”

What an incredible attitude, just allowing the pain to run its course:
    “let it go
    to take
    its time”

You make such a great point that books can change our lives, bring us into our true selves. They are other worlds that cahnge our personal worlds.

    • Yes, I do remember when sunflowers were popular on things…clothing, kitchen towels, and on and on…such a humble, friendly flower. I had a cute dress with sunny sunflowers on it.

From that book that I happened to pick up…I learned haiku and then some other types of poetry..it brought about such big changes in my life..to this blog.

Thanks Shawna, for your most generous comment and visit to me…I so appreciate you taking the time. And for a great prompt at dVerse!

    • I hadn’t noticed that I made a stem for that sunflower…you’re right. I certainly did feel more like a sunny sunflower during that time. Thanks for sharing that with me. 🙂
