Oh Wonder

Oh wonder, the minute hummingbird
Deft, dainty, quickness personified
High-pitched whirring has me lured
Oh wonder, the minute hummingbird
Just here one moment, I thought I heard
And netted sight of colored blur–I tried
Oh wonder, the minute hummingbird
Deft, dainty, quickness personified

  10. Hummingbirds not thought of as “song birds” and yet I caught the music here. Lovely capture of that rarity (By the way, one “stopped” once and perched on my recorder while I was playing in a meadow high above Aspen on Hunter Mountain. One of the joys of my life.

    • Thank you, Gay. Their wings are what make music…such amazing little creatures. I think it’s true that you never forget when you’ve had an encounter with one…I love your story, Gay…how cool was that!

  11. No hummingbirds hereabouts, but you seem to have captured the character of them well in this delightful triolet.

    • It’s actually not as tough as some…as you repeat several lines in the poem. And thank you for the compliment, Trisha.

  16. How beautiful! We have the ruby-throated ones here in the Spring and Summer, and they are such a delight to watch! They sound like HUGE bumble-bees too! I want to try a triolet, sometime. You make it look so easy. 🙂

    • Thank you. I rarely see hummingbirds where I live…I’m so envious. You could do a superb triolet, Corina…it’s really not so difficult…or maybe it is if you’re a pro at it… 🙂 Anyway, I think the repeated lines make it easier than some. 🙂

  17. I found an interesting double meaning to “minute” hummingbird (small and momentary).

We have ruby-throated hummingbirds from May through September, and they come frequently to the nectar feeders but prefer the hosta lilies and fuchsias, etc when they are in bloom. I have the feeders quite near the dining room window so we can watch them closely. They even rest their wings by perching on one of the sessile oak branches that shade the patio there. And to echo the comment above, they do sound like bumble bees–sometimes when I’m outside they helicopter over my head (no doubt wishing I would leave!).

This is a quite beautiful poem about–as you so rightly wrote–a very special bird!

    • I truly am so envious…what a wonderful gift for you to be able to enjoy these birds so up close and personal.

The last time I saw a few of them, I had gone to a rural plant nursery to find some butterfly garden plants and the little things were buzzing all up and down the rows of their favorite plants. I was totally enchanted. Thanks for sharing with me.

I like the sense of repitition. It feels like hummingbird wings.
