International Women’s Day

I’m dedicating this post to the Afghan Women’s Writing Project created by writer Marsha Hamilton:

A global event
for women,
to celebrate
commit and
is today being
presented by
the Women’s

your life and
see where you
can improve
the self worth
of you as a
person and
those around
you in your
world’s realm.

Speak out
strongly when
an opinion
you must
express and
don’t back
down from
those who
would rather
have you mute.

Come together,
there’s strength
in numbers and
encourage and
reach out to
those young girls
and women who
feel afraid to be
and do.  You
each have a voice.

I was researching and reading about International Women’s Day which is today and came across an article written about the Afghan Women’s Writing Project.  It was started by Marsha Hamilton, a novelist and journalist.  It is dedicated to the memory of Zarmeena, an Afghan woman accused of murdering her husband and who was subsequently executed by the Taliban.  Many of these Afghan women write anonymously and in secret from their families in fear of retribution.  They share essays, personal stories and poems about their lives and what they wish for a future where they can have a voice and not hide in fear, and behind the veil of the burqa.  I honor these women and celebrate them today.

  1. What a wonderful and inspiring post and an excellent link to Occupy Blogosphere Thursday. How dare I moan about the difficulties of writing, when I am free to voice my opinions. The strength and courage if the Afghan women in this project is humbling. Thank you so much for sharing your research! 🙂

    • Thanks so much. I feel the same way…I have such freedom and so many choices, how dare I complain about anything. It’s truly humbling when you immerse yourself in the stories of so many women worldwide who are living under such restriction…and fear. I’m glad you could appreciate this.

  2. What a poem, Gayle. It makes me hope fervently that Afghan women will find it…that somehow it will creep through the cracks of insanity and peacefully place itself at the feet of those who need to know the love the world sends to them.

Blacks are speaking up about Black History month. While I understand the intent of this supposedly noble gesture, it’s almost condescending. It causes me to consider International Women’s Day. I hope that the Internet and our blogging world is turning International Women’s Day into everyday. I believe the sages, psychics and seers who are telling the world that the feminine is coming to the fore because it has to. Without it, look where we have come.

    • Thanks a lot, Amy…I’m very happy to be able to share my truly humble poem that expresses my solidarity with the women that have to struggle so to even be able to express an opinion. To share with others and perhaps inspire someone else to open their heart to our sister women throughout the world is the least I can do.

I see what you are saying, Amy. I couldn’t agree more, the feminine must step forward to take our place as leaders…we can barely stand to lose much more. We’re so much more acutely aware of the atrocities going on and how our sisters (and brothers) of the world are being treated. It’s not just this day that is bringing my awareness to so much suffering…it’s everyday. We really can never rest until we are all free.

  3. Thank you for this post.
