Out of Touch

in his mind, he had made
her bigger than life
he put her on a pedestal
until she had grown so
unattainable that even he
couldn’t touch her

now, she remained out
of his reach, forever a
figment of his
imagination, and
no one else
would ever
come close
to meeting
her standards

  2. And, that is so sad when we build idols up into something far more than they deserve. But, I do love the way you wove the tale. Sad for him, for sure. 😉

  8. Putting someone on a pedestal is always going to m ake them loom large – great take.

  9. This is a thought-provoking and heart-wrenching piece. It’s about taking a person and turning her into a thing–a thing that someone else wants her to be. I know that feeling and it’s not one I like to conjure.

    • There’s a lot of this happening in relationships…even with those people who think, “I can fix you and make you what I want”…doomed.

  13. Some are afraid to take the “shine” from off the one that they worship and adore in fear of what they might find underneath.

Hope you had a lovely, sunflower day. 🙂

    • You have to want to see what’s underneath…who wants a shallow, one dimensional relationship? Well, I guess you don’t have to…but if you want something meaningful you may want to consider it. Right?

Thanks for the kind wishes…it was a pretty lovely (I do love sunflowers) day. 🙂

      • Yes, but do some people want meaningful relationships? They might hold people at a distance because of their fears; not only fear of being hurt, again perhaps, but fear that they might not be loved as much in return.

        Sunflowers are my favorite flowers.

  14. Can’t help feeling the last line should be ‘his’ standards? Unless, perhaps, the word ‘else’ were to be cut from line eleven, so it read ‘no one’ ? Apart from that, I think the longing and disappointment in the poem come over well …

  18. I have to agree with Trellissimo, that last line confused me. But overall a sad and honest look at something so common in this day and age, maybe even more so because of the internet – easy to form “connections” that aren’t “real” and yet, the person on the other end of the wires is a real human being (well, in most cases, anyway)…further blurring the lines between reality and illusion. If Art imitates Life, what does the Internet imitate?

  19. Yeah, the more I’ve read it, the more I see the confusion of the last line…what I was trying to say was that the high standards that he held her to, no one else could come close to those standards…could have said it more clearly…oh well…next time around perhaps. 🙂 Whenever we hold someone else above us…we lose the even “playing field” so to speak…no one is more or less than anyone else..it’s our skewed perception of others that make that distinction. Good question, what does the internet imitate? When you have an idea…please share it with me. Thanks for a though-provoking comment, Corina.

  20. What an absolutely perfect photo to go with that poem; or, did the pic inspire the poem. Either way this is a great post, a sort of morality play in brief. … Oh, I see it was Magpie. So picture first. And a great spin then. Love it.
