A Walk in Haiku

The harsh, chilling freeze
Slowly warms into the spring’s
First hint of dewdrops
Left unfrozen upon the
Daffodil, poppy and rose.     (Tanka)

Peacock’s tail lightly
brushes the tall courtyard wall–
disturbing ants’ march

tranquil, green anole
basks on warm, idle footpath
errant fly, no more

Cool, clear, trickling
rivulet, winds through forest
sun warms sloping bank

Leaves rustle gently
as the trumpeting swan glides
by–without a sound

Old bamboo thicket
Red-Crowned Crane selects a mate
Blustering wind sighs

Reflection of moon
Shallow rainwater vision
Mirrored at my feet

  1. I love the marriage of season to nature especially the array of birds as they fit the walk, the journey, the metaphoric journey of the soul. Really ethereal.

  9. I always admire those who do Haiku poems.. I cant for the life of me.. Lol.. I have to get each line to Rhyme.. it bugs me otherwise.. And yet I love reading Haiku ..

    • I’ll bet you could if you put your mind to it. And me…most of my stuff does not rhyme unless the form demands it. I love haiku too…I really appreciate the strong images it produces in so few words..there’s something very powerful in that…

  11. I think the bamboo thicket verse is my favorite. Nice juxtaposition, though maybe a better word than “blustering” is out there to give it some extra oomph.

    • Thank you, Valerie…and you’re right about that “blustering”…I’ll have to think about that…perhaps I can think of something more appropriate.

  12. Beautifully rendered visuals. I’m enthralled by the peacock and the ants. There’s sometime so “alive” in those lines. Beautiful all around.

  14. Oh, there’s so much to like here. The disturbed ants, the absent fly, the silent swan. It’s all just wonderful, and vivid, and beautiful.

    A most fantastic write.

    • Thank you, Renee. Well, I’m wary around peacocks…you may remember my peacock story where I had the “personal” encounter with one particular male…I will keep my distance… 🙂

  17. Very Buddist in form and sentiment and the evidence of the seasons in the birds, water, and sky. I very much enjoyed this. Well considered.

    • I agree…haiku is very Zen-like and by its form incorporates images of nature…my favorite things. Thanks, Jamie.
