dVerse Poets hosted by Brian Miller invites us to Visual-eyes:  http://dversepoets.com/2012/02/18/poetics-visual-eyes-ing/

Many thanks to Reena Walkling (introduced by Brian Miller) for your wonderful photo that got me thinking about my numerous visits to the Gulf…one of my favorite places  in Florida.

Teal-blue of the gulf
stretches in a watery vista,
bridged by inlet, the sea
that separates our lands.

Drawn by the treasures
and mysteries in your depth,
I’m tireless in my scan where
aquamarine meets sky.

Playful Bottlenose dolphins
surf while pelicans observe
drying their wings from
their perches on the pier;

And yak loudly when gathered
in the Australian pines lining
the pure, fine, white sand
home of shorebirds and crabs.

Shells abound on your shores,
making sacred offerings
to those fortunate to uncover
their delicate, exquisite charm.

Nature’s exacting beauty
appeals to my sensibilities;
my spirit rejoices in her
enchanting, scenic splendor.

  1. You have captured the essence of the picture and reflections of the seaside feel… I love the coast (live 60 min. from Galveston). The last stanza says it all.

    • The gulf side of Florida is my favorite…I think we’re both fortunate to be so close to the water…there’s nothing like it.

  2. ah lovely….i used to live on the gulf…matter of fact once swan with dolphins in the wild off ft. desoto…scared me when they first appeared…fins, you know…but you capture some of that beauty well and makes me pine to be back there…nature is def in my heart…

  3. I am enjoying the breeze you captured.

  4. now you made me wanna go, pack my bags and see if i can find a sea and some dolphins…love all the beautiful descriptions here….sigh….

  5. Quite meditative, I found this. Lovely poem.

    “Playful Bottlenose dolphins

    What a great metaphor for those who play and those who watch.

  9. What a delight to read, especially this Sunday morning … makes me homesick for this scenic view and atmospheric lift. Thank you for the trip “home” Gayle! Happy Sunday!!

    • Now it’s Happy Monday…I guess you must have lived near an ocean at some point…I do like that I’m centrally located to either coast. Glad you enjoyed this, Becca…thanks.

  10. This is simply beautiful. I can feel the ocean and hear the animals. Such special colours in the photo too.

  11. I was lucky enough to see dolphins when I was down in Cozumel. What a magical sight for me and my granddaughter who was with me. This oneness with and expansion of spirit that nature gifts us – your poem traces so well.

    • I never tire of seeing them. How nice that you were able to share that with your granddaughter…I’ll bet she loved seeing them too. Thanks for a lovely comment.

  12. The photo is magnificient, but your poem is equally in lyrically sharing the experience of gazing on and living such a scene.

    I’m SO sorry, Bodhirose, for my LONG absence! Had a lot going on, but know I have missed too much of your lovely poetry, images and reflections. Hope you are well. Blessings!

    • Thanks for stopping by…how nice to hear from you again and I hope all is well with you too. So glad you enjoyed my trip to the gulf…I always have an amazing time there.

  13. you touch on a lot of aspects of the painting, eg you start with the colors but end with depicting the nature scene. 🙂

    • I was immediately taken to the gulf when I saw the photo….if you could see the color of that water…it’s just incredible. Thanks for coming by… 🙂

  14. You have described my “Paradise”. You are absolutely on – target.
    I knew it from the start. Aren’t we fortunate ???
    Love the photo. If you’d like to use an image of mine just email me.

    • Mine too, Izzy. This photo was one of several photo prompts over at dVerse Poets this week…pretty cool, huh? Thanks for your very generous offer, Izzy, that’s a good idea…I might just take you up on that.

  16. I love this stanza:

    Playful Bottlenose dolphins
    surf while pelicans observe
    drying their wings from
    their perches on the pier;

    I can just see it now … feeing like I’m there! Well done 🙂

  17. loved the amazing description of ocean. you word painted the scene. that pic is really cute 🙂

  18. Beautiful picture, and your words were full of great imagery, as usual. Made me feel like I was almost there at the beach…can close my eyes and imagine the sights, smells and sounds. You are lucky to be so close to it. 🙂

    • That is a great photo isn’t it. When growing up, we went to the beaches on the Atlantic side of the state…Daytona Beach, Cocoa, where my brother usually surfed, and New Smyrna…it’s always so packed with people…you wouldn’t believe what it looks like during spring break. But now I prefer the gulf side….much calmer water…more shells and sea animals to observe…so beautiful…Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Ft. Myers…just stunning. I do feel very fortunate to have grown up being so close to the ocean. Thanks, Corina. 🙂

  19. Very nice post. I absolutely appreciate this website. Keep it up!

  20. Absolutely wonderful! 😉 You have painted a word picture as beautiful and captivating as the photograph. How lovely. Splendor indeed… and playful. I so enjoyed the mental vision of the dolphans watched by the pelicans.

    • Thank you, Jamie. My love for those natural scenes touches my soul…truly is a splendor. Hey, everybody loves to watch those dolphins! 🙂
