Shadow

Shadow follows
and creeps about
peeking, hiding,
whispering a shout.
There in the
background
keeping watch,
it rears its head
magnifying your
fears.  You can’t
escape its far-
reaching charm,
the Shadow loiters
bringing you harm.

If you can’t see it,
you’re in trouble
indeed…you must
face it squarely
and pay it great heed.
Inferiorities feed
and make it darker,
focus on weakness,
amplifying its strength.

This Shadow is
persistent but can
be decreased.  The
Self of Light is the
path to take.  Don’t
be ashamed, it
clings to us all,
this deep, abiding
gloom that thrives
deep inside.

Look at it, face it,
don’t back down.
It will quiver away
and leave you profound.

  1. WOW … intense … I love it. So very descriptive of the
shadow of fears we all carry.
    Awesome ..

  2. Powerful, Gayle. I know most people fear what lurks in the shadows (both inside themselves and outside).

For some reason, I find shadows comforting. I once noticed my shadow and saw my outline. Nothing but potential lay inside it. It was such a liberating moment. I was perfect in the boundaries of my shadow…

    • I think I remember you mentioning that before…about the darkness being of comfort to you. That seems like it was a pretty profound moment you had there with your shadow…very cool indeed.

  3. As in the night – our fears can loom larger in the shadows than in the sunlight. We should learn to trust the Divine Light to brighten our path especially in the shadows of the moving darkness. Very powerful verse!

  4. We all have shadows, yes, but I think it takes a lot of courage to face one’s Shadow Self…and I think it is a lifetime commitment. The Shadow Self doesn’t just go away and never come back, it returns again and again throughout a lifetime (or lifetimes, for that matter). I really like the depths beneath the surface of this write, Gayle. You touched on some important truisms in this.

    • Oh, you’re so right about that, Corina…yes, probably many lifetimes, and courage, to come to “terms” with the Shadow Self…it’s an interesting topic for me.
