Amongst the trailing vines
and brush lain on the ground,
is found an impish bird, a
shape of squatting round.
Strong in presence,
though tiny and quick,
distinct, white eyebrows curve
over beaded, black blinks.
Plump, though with charm,
he trills a rapid staccato
that sounds like teakettle,
loud, insistent with alarm.
Agile, cheerful, lively,
with short, bobbed tails that cock up
and down, they’re dainty and yet,
possess formidable personality.
Their orangey, cream breasts
show up in bright relief against
the deep red of the Hibiscus.
Cinnamon brown spices up the rest.
Barred markings on tail and wing,
patterned design is appended.
Hopping, flitting, trilling, scolding,
staking his territory as he sings.
The woods, forests, wherever
trees grow dense, offer him
a tangled haven of nesting
vegetation and ample cover.
Scaling trunks of the tall, scrub pine
searching for insects with swift,
sure jabs of his strong, short beak,
his success is sufficient for the family’s dine.
A most enthralling bird,
I admire with fascination
and with equal veneration. He’s
the opposite of me…he isn’t demure.
These birds are common in my yard here in Central Florida.

/ February 5, 2012How we humans are attracted by these beings that defy gravity and move so lightly in the world. Their beauty of flight often only matched by their splendor of exterior design and harmony of color. You have captured wonderfully the dainty beings that inhabit your world. Lucky you! 🙂

/ February 5, 2012We hear them sometimes in Port Aransas. We’re on one species migration path. We get the small green warblers too; they’re hard to see but they have wonderful songs. Great description and poetry here. Loved it.

/ February 8, 2012I’m an avid bird lover…lucky not to have any problem birds around me…but recently in the news was a man who likes to feed vultures! He was attracting so many to his neighborhood that they were causing huge problems with their stinky poop all over people’s homes and driveways. Can you imagine?!
I love those darling Chickadees too as well as their cousin the Tufted Titmouse…I love their very cute vocals.

/ February 7, 2012Loved the video and “shape of squatting round” was perfect! You definitely did this fluffy little guy justice. I agree with what the others have said, you’ve managed to capture his personality perfectly! There was some really good alliteration in this one, Gayle. A very lyrical write! You know, in Celtic legends, the wren is the bird “king” and considered sacred. 🙂
