Two Little Girls

Two little girls were a part of my world;
they were consuming, yet so endearing.
Waking up to their sweet babbles,
my heart was totally over brimming.

All the tasks that went into mothering
were not work at all but many blessings.
My soul delighted in all the giving but got
much more through those sweet eyes.

You looked to me with trusting eyes,
I held that trust with sacred love.
I treasured the time spent caring for you,
the most precious period of my life.

The years went by so fast it seems,
sometimes it’s almost like a dream.
So many special moments recalled,
a wealth of joy and you growing tall.

Celebrations, gifts and festivities
were so much more fun shared with you.
Your giggles charmed and brought a smile,
My pride in you I hope you knew.

My protective prayer is with you both;
may love surround and keep you safe.
Even though you’re women grown,
You’re still my girls, my dearest ones.

  1. Gayle, you describe what must be the most sublime experience on earth, and you do with with so much tenderness. Enjoy the most important work of art you could ever create.

    • I know it may not be for many mothers but I totally embraced motherhood–I grew so much from that experience. Such a blessing– and they turned out to be wonderful human beings too!

      Thanks, Victoria. I’ve missed your presence but know you’re busy. xo

  2. Lovely poem. what a joy a deep commitment like this to your own flesh and blood must give. We all make our own lives and I have travelled mine mostly alone with no regrets.

    • Thanks so much. I’ve been deeply blessed to have been gifted those two. Even though sometimes I wanted to scream (well sometimes I did!) and run away from home…

      I’m glad your choices have left you with no regrets. At times I have envied those who have traveled solo.

  4. Loving tribute … I was still my dad’s little girl until he passed a couple of years ago!!

  5. Beautiful. As your child(ren) ages, the relationship changes, but the love only deepens. you captured the nature of the evolution of the parent-child bond so beautifully.

    • Thank you, Lorna. Yes, the relationships shifted and changed through the different phases (teenagers!)…and if you’re lucky you’ll all end up respecting and loving one another. It’s not for the faint of heart is it.

  6. parenting was one of the joys of my life and now a second round with the grandchildren is just as big a joy…nice writing

  7. I’m still awaiting the grandchildren. My sister has let me borrow hers on occasion! Thanks, Charlie.
