20 Minutes

Lunch, George Tooker, 1964, Columbus Museum of Art

Chewing, sipping, dropping crumbs–
No time to chat; 20 minutes, I’m done.

  9. I once worked with a Hindu professor who always lunched alone while sitting next to a window, watching the beautiful lake that was outside our building. He took a full half-hour to eat a meager lunch. I often told him how much I admired his mindful approach to eating. He said it was one of his daily meditations.

While I never adopted his practice, I still admire it and your poem made me think of how maybe I should eat more mindfully.

    • I admire that too. I may not always eat very mindfully, but I always eat slowly–it pains me to hurry. Thanks for sharing this, Lorna.
