The tree of life
Has roots so sturdy
A steady base
Supporting all
A trunk is needed
To sustain each branch
Of myriad sizes
Each one a must
Tiny twigs
A limb becomes
Forking out
Diverging solid
Different directions
Taken by all
Freedom to grow
Brings strength to the whole
Though some may falter
And break away
The remaining bough
Makes up the altar
Each one relying
Through years of strife
Bearing what comes
Sustaining life
Though winds may blow
And trials lay waste
The tree stands firm
With yielding grace
It reaches high
Elevating itself
Fearless, bold, self-assured
Honorable, dignified and blessed

/ May 27, 2011Trees are one of my favorite metaphors of the mystical life and, of course, this poem conjures up images of Kabbalistic spirituality. Nicely done, Gayle.

/ May 27, 2011It seems that many belief systems use the metaphor of the tree in their teachings. Most can relate to their strength and stateliness as being qualities that we strive for.
Thanks, Victoria.

/ June 3, 2011This should be on a greeting card.
Does where a “seed” is planted, its environment, determine if it’ll be a strong tree, a mildly strong tree, or a weak tree? I’m always going back to the nurture versus nature debate, perhaps both have a role to play in a tree of life.
Have a great weekend. 🙂

/ June 3, 2011Why thank you, Apollorose–what a nice thing to say.
I think it does make a difference as to the strength of a tree as to where the seed is planted. And of course some seeds never sprout and become trees at all. Only those will grow strong that have all the components that can sustain life–sun, water (not too much, not too little) nutrients, etc. What if a tree should grow where there is a “tree disease” and it becomes infected. And are some trees “born” with internal maladies like humans? I think so.
Thank you–you have a good weekend too. : )
