Public Image

I’ve impeded my progress

My fear holds me fast

Hesitation of the unknown

Has brought me standstill

I won’t make a move

I don’t know what I’ll face

It’s safer and more comfortable

To not try at all

I might fail

Someone may laugh

I’ll be ashamed

With blaming derision

I think to myself

The message is clear

Don’t go out the door

No one likes me out there

So I’ve made up my mind–

My best friend’s my computer

I can show my fearless side

Safe behind my public image

  1. Totally relate, Gayle. Take your time.

Thanks for visiting us at Bardo and for your kind words.

    In metta,

    • This is one facet of me–sometimes it crops up. Thanks for your gentle encouragement, Jamie.

You’re very welcome–I enjoy the Bardo.

  3. hi, this poem came up as I was tag surfing for poetry so I stopped by to look around. I find your words honest, powerful, and perhaps even a bit vulnerable. I bookmarked and will return to read again. Thanks for sharing yourself.

    • Hi–so happy to have you end up here. Come again any time–and thank you for the generous compliment.

      And you’re welcome…

  5. Hi Gayle, 🙂

Your opening verse is an admission for the “failure” of becoming; your closing verse is a conclusion to accepting that “failure”.

In Japan and some other countries, people who have a fear of going out, hiding away from the world are known as Hikkomori.

I know with the advent of social media, people can be anyone that they want to be, unless of course they are who they say they are. 🙂

Public versus private image, is it a form of being deceptive?

    • Hi Apollorose,

This writing was more of a general nature with hopes some could relate–although I have at times felt this way–probably more so when I was younger. I’ve never become agoraphobic and can be quite social at times.

I believe my true nature is well represented here on my blog–in all its myriad forms. 😀

Certainly people use deceptive images online as well as face-to-face. It’s a chance we take when we meet each other.

      • The “your” in the comment was speaking about you as the writer and not the subject.

I agree with the last line.

Yes, your entries has led me to see you as a person who enjoys life, being social, inspiring, lesson(s) giver, etc. 🙂

  6. Sometimes I misunderstand what people are trying to comment on– I think I understand you now.

I’m very glad that I am getting “myself” across to all of you out there (at least I am to you anyway). Thanks for letting me know that, Apollorose. 🙂

  7. its better to try and fall, this mindset is acceptable till teenage. after that, for our own sake we should embrace failure with success.
