A Quiet Girl

She was a quiet girl

With poise of one much older

Not prone to sudden outbursts

Her emotions were steady and even

Petite and slight with hazel, green eyes

She was shy and demure though quick and bright

Her hair cascaded dark around her shoulders

With bangs cut straight across her ivory-complexioned forehead

Freckles were sprinkled lightly across her nose and cheeks

Which the sunshine deepened the hue

During summer’s heightened heat

She loved to while away long hours

Daydreaming and reading books

Mostly about other children

And the interesting paths they took

Imagination was her best friend

Thoughts-of-fancy was her close second

These two accompanied her through childhood

Offering hope, optimism and trust

Red-headed bird in a plum tree

Carries greetings and good tidings–

An award for the poet’s rally!

Many thanks and much gratitude–you put a smile on my face!  I would like to nominate Tally.

  9. To take those lovely descriptive phrases, write them in their linier perfection, and then link them, one after another, flawlessly in a poem is a wonderful accomplishment.

I saw so many comments today on this. I reread it.
Lovely…oh how I think it is so much a memory of a few years before.

I loved how you described yourself (it’s “you” who’s the quiet girl right?). I saw myself in the last few lines, especially this part: “She loved to while away long hours//Daydreaming and reading books.”

  20. Great poem, brilliant imagery. Reminds me of myself (the nose in the book, certainly not the gender or temprement [once I bother to add my view]). Loved the shape of the poem, was that planned or did it just fall in place? Amazing poem.

  23. I can picture that quiet, thoughtful girl. Growing up with a vivid imagination and flights of fancy, I think she’s not changed much. She still has a compassionate heart, a vivid imagination, thoughtful comments, and a wonderful way of putting her poems together.
