    • Usually the family meets at my sister Jan’s house for a big dinner around 2PM. This year our sister, Mary, and brother Rama will be here with us–they both live out of state. After dinner we all gather in the living room where the Christmas tree is and exchange and open gifts. After that we all just hang around well into the evening just visiting–eating more and having desserts. It’s pretty low key and relaxed. We always have music playing in the background.

Dinner is a traditional one with turkey–sometimes ham is added, (I’m vegetarian so don’t eat the meats) dressing (or stuffing), mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, lots of different vegetable dishes or casseroles, rolls, cranberry sauce, and usually several different types of dessert: pumpkin pie, cheesecake, chocolate pie, fudge, whatever people want to make and bring to share. We have a lot of food! Pretty much it’s identical to the Thanksgiving dinner that we had the month previous!

Sometimes I have gone to the ashram where my daughters live. They have a similar dinner (except no meat because the ashram is meatless) and after dinner anyone who wants to can join in with “movie darshan” where they go to a local movie theater to watch a movie. It’s fun and relaxed there too with lots of people to visit. I went there last year for Thanksgiving and Christmas both–I always love seeing my girls. They have a huge Christmas tree decorated there as well.
