Sita

Here are photos of my cat, Sita.  She is 13 years old now and in excellent health.  My daughter adopted her when she was an infant kitty.  She was very happy living with us in a small apartment that had an enclosed courtyard around it.  We would let her out to play in the courtyard where she would occasionally capture a lizard that was one of her favorite tasty morsels.  If we ever happened to glance out there and see her with the tell-tale “grimace” that alerted us to the fact that she had captured one in her mouth, we would run out there and make her let it go.  She hated that and would run from us.  We couldn’t bear the fact that she was killing the lizards–she could care less.  After all she’s a cat–what were we thinking?!

My daughter made the huge mistake of thinking Sita needed a playmate and adopted a male kitten she named Rumi, after the Sufi poet.  Sita thought this was a horrible idea and never would warm up to her new “brother”.  It was a disaster.  Sita had to deal with him in “her space” for several years before my daughter moved away and decided that to take two cats who hated each other would not be the greatest idea.  So we gladly took her in and she has been happily living with Tom and me for several years now.  She is so much happier being an “only kitty”!

She’s very affectionate and loves to get into my lap for a snooze or a cuddle.  Her “Dad” gives her a good brushing everyday which she loves.  And will wait patiently for him outside his bathroom door to finish with his shower in the mornings for him to administer the anticipated brushing.

She has a little stool that she gets on throughout the day and night to check out the front of the house.  Usually that’s where she’ll spot an intruding cat and if they approach too closely to her window seat–all hell will break loose with full-fledged puffed up, bristled fur, accompanied by loud caterwauling!  Thank you, Sita, for alarming the household of the danger lurking outside!

She has a “paper patch” and a catnip patch that she loves to roll around in and play.  The paper patch consists of discarded, multi-colored tissue paper (the kind that comes in a gift package).  She loves to lie in it and pretend there are “things” hiding within its “crinkly” crevices and attack them.  She is very good at “disemboweling” these imagined tissue critters.  Her catnip patch is right next to her paper patch.  This is where she will receive her pinch of “nip” and scratch at it vigorously before flipping on her back while she then lazily lolls in her “purple haze” of bliss.

  2. I’ve always thought that she was very pretty. She will look at the camera when I say her name. It seems like when Sita was very young she wouldn’t let us brush her either. She would keep biting at the brush–like it was a toy.

I think when cats get a bit older and can settle down–they will love to be brushed. Otherwise, they just think you are playing with them–it’s useless. 🙂

  5. That can be the reason. 🙂 tiny kittens are always ready to play. they are either sleeping or eager to play.

  6. I’m sure as they grow older they will love to be brushed. Even now, though, Sita can only take so much and then she will abruptly run away. She purrs loudly when being brushed and will sometimes even roll over onto her back for a tummy brushing. You have to be cautious with the tummy–it can be ticklish!

  8. I think they’re all probably too young to try and brush yet. But you can let them get used to seeing and having the brush around and then gradually try a little brushing here and there as they calm down.

  12. I don’t have nearly the cute stories to tell that you do, Trisha, about all your kitties. Older cats just aren’t that active–especially indoor, older cats!

  14. I remember trying to teach my new kitten not to chew on household electric cords. Not a good combination! Anything that makes a noise (like the keyboard) or wiggles (hanging wires) is fair game for them. You really have your hands full with multiple kitties!

  17. Sometimes they do. specially when they are planning to run ruckus at middle of the night. the night bef yday trixie slept all evening, then at eleven thirty she suddenly decided that she wanted to play so she started a ruckus, finally i had to scare her out of the rooms and close the window 🙂

two kids playing rough at middle of the night is ok, but one adult playing rough at the middle of night is a strict no no.

  18. That is the very reason, I would never let a cat sleep in my room with me at night. I have tried and tried, but the annoyance became too much for me. So Sita knows she is not welcome at night in my bedroom. But I will let her nap with me if I should take one during the day. She settles right down and lays behind my knees. Sometimes when I get up she isn’t done yet and will continue napping on and on… 🙂

  20. Kittens don’t care about the time of day or night–they just have to play and play until they’re worn out. But cats are supposed to be nocturnal aren’t they? Maybe only wild ones, not domesticated. My cat is awake or asleep no matter day or night.

  21. i think i am confusing them. forget about the little ones, even pixie spent the whole night the night before last night snuggled up in my bed.

he is becoming so cute day by day, he plays musical chair with the kids all the time. 🙂 capturing their favourite spots, including my bed. he never slept in bed before 🙂

  22. It must be a real treat for Pixie to sleep snuggled in bed with you. I think it makes cats very happy when people allow them to sleep with them. And cats will often try to boss each other by taking their favorite sleeping spots or toys, etc. 🙂

    Aren’t they such nice company…
