Peacock’s tail lightly
brushes the tall courtyard wall–
disturbing ants’ march

tranquil, green anole
basks on warm, idle footpath
errant fly, no more

Cool, clear, trickling
rivulet, winds through forest
sun warms sloping bank

Leaves rustle gently
as the trumpeting swan glides
by–without a sound

Old bamboo thicket
Red-Crowned Crane selects a mate
Blustering wind sighs

Reflection of moon
Shallow rainwater vision
Mirrored at my feet

Welcoming ancient gate
Home, repast, sanctuary
Owl begins his night

The Brownie camera
lays there in the
bottom drawer of the
secretary, not used
for half a century
now, abandoned for
the newer technology
that has made photo
taking effortless and
uncomplicated.

But the many
treasured photos–
of us all at the beach,
lined up neatly in the
front yard, spotted with
measles, playing with our
neighborhood pals
and at birthdays
and special events…
all those long ago,
dearly-departed days,
were taken by that
beloved Brownie.
It, as well as the
bygone era it
served to capture,
is so lovingly valued
and memorably cherished.

Many thanks to Reena Walkling (introduced by Brian Miller) for your wonderful photo that got me thinking about my numerous visits to the Gulf…one of my favorite places  in Florida.

Teal-blue of the gulf
stretches in a watery vista,
bridged by inlet, the sea
that separates our lands. 

Drawn by the treasures
and mysteries in your depth,
I’m tireless in my scan where
aquamarine meets sky.

Playful Bottlenose dolphins
surf while pelicans observe
drying their wings from
their perches on the pier;

And yak loudly when gathered
in the Australian pines lining
the pure, fine, white sand
home of shorebirds and crabs. 

Shells abound on your shores,
making sacred offerings
to those fortunate to uncover
their delicate, exquisite charm. 

Nature’s exacting beauty
appeals to my sensibilities;
my spirit rejoices in her
enchanting, scenic splendor.

essence within
my nature’s core
the fundamental “me”
that is without sin

untouched and pure
clean and clear
may this clarity
in life emerge

this eternally-lit heart
rests in a sacred space
sitting in stillness
no strife can impart

unfathomable spirit

translucent light shines
beyond maya’s storm
no limited becoming
binds the soul’s divine

calling before I drift off…
envisioning muse
leads me in conversations
designs a new room
creates a bird-patterned dress
lifts me into flight
anoints me with awed blessings
softly floats me off to sleep

When the day is sinking low
And dusk begins its deepening glow 

Children get their second wind
Thinking day has begun again

Rowdiness and shouts of play
Causes parents to begin to sway

Stop!  Be still!
They try instill

But kids don’t stop; it’s too much fun
They’re sure they’re seeing Mr. Sun

Jumping beans upon the bed
Make Mom and Dad grab their heads 

Racing and chasing and half undressed
Their eyes are wild like something obsessed 

“Come”, Mom says, “let’s read a book.”
“Let’s quiet down, here take a look.”

When Mom begins with her soothing voice,
Kids’ heads nod as if they have no choice
