Down, Dark, Deep

Down, dark, deep
below earth’s light,
live creatures unseen
by our innocent eyes.

They’re inhuman,
obscene and incredibly
shrewd to the ways
of cruelty and anguished pain.

Their eyes squint with
an otherworldly gleam,
flashing with a thrill
to hurt and maim.

Lips curled in merciless
glee, they intone mantras
of depravity.  From chasms
beneath, they wander alone,
banished from existence forevermore.

In limbo they’re sentenced,
no victims they claim;
the hell that they know
is marked with their names.

Over at Imaginary Garden With Real Toads, Fireblossom, for Fireblossom Friday,  invites us to write on devils.  This is a re-post with a minor change.  http://withrealtoads.blogspot.com/2012/07/fireblossom-friday-devil-you-say.html

  4. I love that after you describe their evil so intensely, you assure us that they are already in limbo and dis empowered. “marked by their names” !!

  11. The wickedness and also a sense of empty isolation is strong in this. Thanks so much for being a part of FBF! Just one note for future reference; a new poem was asked for in the instructions, as is the case with all the challenges at Toads except for open link monday.

  14. Pacing is excellent and lends verisimilitude to the piece. One ends up really feeling that promise of hell. Excellent work.
