David Attenborough presents the amazing lyre bird, which mimics the calls of other birds – and chainsaws and camera shutters – in this video clip from The Life of Birds. This clever creature is one of the most impressive and funny in nature, with unbelievable sounds to match the beautiful pictures. From the BBC.

/ August 1, 2011Gayle! Thank you for this. I have never seen or heard of this bird and you had me sitting here with my jaw hanging open in utter amazement. I love life! He is fascinating. :) …and I would look twice, so stand outish with his plumage.

/ August 2, 2011I know, Leslie! I had heard of this bird but had never seen one or certainly never knew they could do this! Shocking! They actually sound exactly like what they mimic. I watched it twice when I found this video–just to hear the sounds he made over again–wow!

/ August 2, 2011This was an amazing little video. Thanks for turning me on to the coolest array of sounds since I went on an “owl crawl” and heard a bunch of owls that sounded like… chimpanzees! I swear. And wow, that kid can puff up with the best of them! Amy

/ August 2, 2011I was just in awe when I heard this bird! Wow! His tail feathers are quite delicate and beautiful too aren’t they. And there are owls that sound like chimpanzees?
Thanks for providing your link here for me, Amy.

/ August 2, 2011Wow, Gayle. This is incredible. My two dogs are crashed on the couch next to me and Zoe, who is for all practical purposes DEAF, jumped up and ran to the door to the back yard. Of course, Sparky followed. It amazes me how Zoe can hear only a few things. It must have been the high pitch.
Bodhirose
/ August 2, 2011It is, isn’t it!
I’ll bet it was the high pitch of the bird’s calls that Zoe could hear and set her running. Cute!
